TABLE OF CONTENTS
I love trip planning, but sometimes I can get overwhelmed by all the details and how to keep them orgaized.
Finding the right travel planning app can make things a lot easier. Two popular options are Wanderlog and TripIt. In this post, we'll break down the process step by step for both tools to help you figure out which one works best for your travel planning needs. Wanderlog vs TripIt – let's see which one comes out on top!
Wanderlog VS. TRIPIT: Which Travel Planner is Best for You?
Step One: Name Your Trip
Wanderlog:
Wanderlog offers a simple and intuitive start to your trip planning. You can enter your destination and other details later, which is perfect for those who like to plan on the go or don’t have all their details sorted out yet. You also have the option to forward confirmation emails to Wanderlog and they will automatically be saved to the system for you.
TripIt:
With TripIt, you must enter a destination city and start and end dates. If you're in the early stages of planning, you might find yourself inputting random dates and needing to remember to update them later. TripIt allows you to enter your details manually or you can forward your confirmation emails to TripIt, just like Wanderlog. However, my experience planning a trip to Alaska showed that this method isn’t always foolproof.
Step Two: Share Your Trip
Wanderlog:
Sharing your trip on Wanderlog is straightforward. You can copy the link or invite others via email. Additionally, you can decide whether your travel partners can ‘view only’ or have editing permissions. Note that your travel partners will need to sign up to access the shared trip.
TripIt:
TripIt offers similar sharing options as Wanderlog. You can share your trip details and invite others to view or edit. If your travel partner wants to view the trip on their phone, they will need the TripIt app.
Step Three: Immediate Observations
When first using these apps, I noticed some differences that stood out:
Wanderlog: Even without reservations, Wanderlog provides numerous options to explore the city through an interactive map, set a budget, and more.
TripIt: While TripIt is also functional without reservations, it doesn't offer the same level of city exploration and budgeting tools upfront.
Step Four: Adding Reservations
Wanderlog:
Adding reservations in Wanderlog is a breeze. You can manually enter flights, hotels, and activities, or import them from your email. Wanderlog’s user-friendly interface makes it easy to organize your trip and see everything at a glance. You also have the option to search for flights and hotels directly within the app. However, I always recommend booking directly instead of through a third party.
TripIt:
TripIt also shines when it comes to adding reservations. Forward your confirmation emails, and TripIt automatically organizes them into a master itinerary. However, as mentioned earlier, this feature can sometimes be hit or miss depending on the email format and details.
Additional Features
Wanderlog:
Interactive Maps: Easily explore and add points of interest, check out travel guides, plus it offers AI assist to help you gather more information about your destination/trip.
Budget Tracking: Keep an eye on your travel expenses.
Collaborative Planning: Work with your travel partners in real-time.
TripIt:
Real-Time Alerts: Receive notifications about flight changes and delays.
Master Itinerary: Automatically compiles your reservations into a single view.
Travel Stats: Track your travel history and see interesting stats about your trips.
Which App Should You Choose?
Choosing between Wanderlog and Tripit depends on your travel planning style:
Use Wanderlog if: You prefer a flexible planning approach, enjoy exploring interactive maps, and need robust budgeting tools.
Use TripIt if: You value automated itinerary creation, need real-time alerts for your flights, and like seeing detailed travel stats.

My Final Thoughts:
In conclusion, both Wanderlog and Tripit are excellent travel planning tools, each with unique features tailored to different types of travelers. Wanderlog is a small company, and I am very excited to see what other features will be offered in the future!
They are free to use but also offer paid versions that offer premium features (I use the free version of both). By understanding your own needs and preferences, you can select the app that will help make your trip-planning process smoother and more enjoyable.
Planning your trip should be a fun part of your travel experience, not a stressful chore. With apps like TripIt and Wanderlog, you have the tools to organize your adventures efficiently. Whether you need flexibility and collaborative features or automated itinerary management and real-time updates, there's an app for you.
Since this comparison, Wanderlog has been working on exciting new features that are set to make travel planning even easier. Don’t miss out—check out my latest post on Wanderlog’s Upcoming Features to see what’s coming next!
