I know it can be easy to get stumped when deciding which clothes to pack for an upcoming trip.

Which usually results in what I call “the luggage struggle”. You know what I mean, lugging around an overly heavy suitcase with no one to bail you out. Fellow traveler, look no further! The "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" packing method is a game-changing strategy that will change how you pack for travel.

With the steps listed below, you can create a versatile and stylish wardrobe that will make you look and feel your best on any trip. Stick with me, and I'll show you how easy it is to implement this brilliant strategy. You’ve got this!

    What is the "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" Packing Method?

Planning a travel wardrobe can be fun when we know where to start! First, pick a small collection of versatile clothing. Then, each item will be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits, looks, and styles. After narrowing down your selections, your travel wardrobe will consist of 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 outer layers, 2 shoes, 1 dress + a cute & comfortable airplane outfit. Sounds crazy but the benefits are highly worth it!

    Benefits of a "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" Travel Wardrobe

Here is why many travel enthusiasts and minimalist experts recommend this technique as a way to make travel & packing easier.

    1. Efficiency: By prioritizing your needs, you’ll avoid the common mistake of overpacking AND ensure you have everything necessary for your trip.

    2. Space-saving: Limiting yourself to a specific number of items will ensure you choose versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. This saves valuable space & weight in your suitcase.

    3. Lighter luggage: A heavy suitcase can quickly become a burden while staying in small accommodations, during long layovers, going up or down stairs, or navigating crowded transportation (basically… travelling in general). By using the "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" method, you'll significantly reduce the weight of your luggage, making your travel experience more comfortable and enjoyable! Heck yes!

    4. Less stress: Overpacking often leads to stress and anxiety when trying to organize and find items within your suitcase. With the "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" method, you'll have a streamlined packing process, knowing exactly what you've packed and where to find it.

    5. Save Money: Avoid paying baggage fees!

Wardrobe Planning Considerations for your trip

    • Length of your trip

    • Climates, weather, day & night time temperatures

    • Local customs

    • Activities, excursions and transportation

    • Whether or not you will do laundry while you are away

    • The material of clothes and if they are wrinkle-resistant and dry quickly

    • What you already own and what you need to purchase

Here is a traveller’s secret. Don’t pack anything that you haven’t already worn. Also, you will feel more confident and comfortable if you don’t worry about looking like a tourist; you are one. Embrace it and enjoy the journey!

Select Comfortable But Stylish Travel Shoes

It might seem odd that footwear is first on the list, but coordinating your wardrobe with comfortable travel shoes is vital!

The right shoes can prevent blisters and foot pain, allowing you to thoroughly enjoy your travel experience.

Try limiting yourself to two pairs of versatile shoes and one pair for your airplane outfit. For example, a pair of sneakers for long days on your feet and a pair of flats for daytime activities or dressier evenings. Don’t forget to wear your bulkiest shoes on the plane to save space and weight in your luggage.

Shoes include white sneakers, beige sandals, brown flats, tan heels, and brown strappy sandals.

    Decide On A Colour Scheme

Choosing a colour theme is easier than it sounds!

    1. Choose three core neutrals to work with.

    2. Pick one to two accent colours.

    3. Add one to two patterns/textures for interest.

    4. Additionally, you will want to ensure the colours complement each other and your shoes.

    5. Finally, consider the season and backdrops. For example, making specific colour choices to match the iconic white and blue colours of the Greek Islands is very common.

Neutrals can include: beige, taupe, gray, cream, brown, black, navy blue, olive green and white.

Tops and bottoms should be interchangeable and easy to mix and match as part of your 5-4-3-2-1 wardrobe.

Opt for low-maintenance fabrics like nylon and polyester that are quick-drying and wrinkle-resistant. While wrinkle-release sprays are an option, a Conair handheld travel steamer is a good investment for those on the go.

Pick 5 Tops for your travel wardrobe

Now, it's time to select five tops!

Look for tops that can be easily dressed up or down and can be paired with different bottoms.

Choose 2-3 neutral colours and 1-2 patterns that will easily coordinate with your wardrobe.

Remember, the goal is to create a capsule wardrobe that maximizes your outfit possibilities while minimizing the number of items you pack.

A closer look at the tops includes a navy tank, white button-up, red tank, red floral blouse, and navy blouse.

As you can see above I picked white and navy blue as the neutrals, red for a pop of color and one pattern to keep it interesting.

    Pack 4 Bottoms

After choosing your tops, it's time to pick four bottoms that can be paired with your selected tops. Consider versatile options such as a pair of jeans, black leggings, linen pants or a pair of shorts, depending on the climate and nature of your trip. By carefully selecting bottoms that can be mixed and matched with your tops, you'll be able to create a variety of outfits without bringing excess clothing.

Here, I selected all neutral colors and one pattern. that can easily be coordinated with the tops above.

    Choose 3 Layers

Growing up in the PNW, I have grown to love layers because they make it easy to quickly adjust to changing temperatures.

Jean jackets are a very popular option, but remember the extra bulk they will add to your bag. Consider wearing your jean jacket on the airplane.

I also really like kimono-style shirts that can double up as a swimsuit coverup. Obviously, your choices will depend on your destination and the weather.

    Pack 2 Pairs Of Shoes

2 comfortable pairs of shoes that can be dressed up or down.

red dress, white blouser, brown flats, colourful kimono, blue wedges and white knit cardigan

    Decide On One Dress

Consider a dress that is versatile and feels comfy. It would be nice to have a dress you can easily switch up from day to night.

If you are like me and many other women that tend to get a bit of thigh rub, consider a pair of thigh society under shorts or chub rub.

How To Pick An Airplane Outfit

Looking for an airport outfit that's easy to put together and super comfy?

This one is perfect! All you need are some basic items in neutral colors, and a few stylish accessories to add some flair. For a cozy airplane outfit, just grab your favorite fitted shirt and leggings, and layer with a sweater or long cardigan to keep you warm and stylish.

Don't forget to choose shoes that you can easily slip off when going through security.

    Visually Plan Your Outfits

Outfits include combinations of tops, bottoms, and dresses in neutral and colorful tones, such as a kimono, tank tops, blouses, shorts, pants, and a dress.

Here you can see just a few outfit options but there are so many different looks I could create with just 15 items and an airplane outfit!

    Accessories

Lastly, you can complete your travel wardrobe with a small collection of versatile accessories.

Accessories are a great way to add variety to your outfits without taking up too much space in your suitcase. This could be a statement necklace, a scarf, or a hat, depending on your personal style and the destination you're travelling to. Although, I don’t recommend packing anything that is irreplaceable.

    Common mistakes to avoid

While the "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" packing method is designed to help you pack efficiently, there are a few common mistakes to avoid:

    1. Overpacking: The whole point of this packing method is to limit yourself to a specific number of items. Avoid the temptation to add extra items "just in case" and stick to the predetermined quantities.

    2. Ignoring the climate or terrain: Pack accordingly to ensure you have the appropriate clothing & footwear for your trip.

    3. Forgetting about laundry options: If you're traveling for an extended period, think about the laundry facilities available at your destination. This can help you pack fewer items and do laundry as needed.

Expert Tips For Packing Your Travel Wardrobe

    • Roll or fold: Rolling your clothes can save space and minimize wrinkles. However, I find some items are best to be folded. Try both methods and see what works best for each specific item.

    • Use packing cubes: Packing cubes are a great tool for organizing your luggage and maximizing space. They allow you to group similar items together, making it easier to locate specific items without having to dig through your entire suitcase. If you want to keep things extra organized, you can give your packing cubes labels.

    • Use compression cubes: Compression cubes help you pack more in a tight space. I use these for socks, and underwear, and to separate dirty laundry.

    • Wear your bulkiest items: If you're travelling with bulky items such as a winter coat or boots, consider wearing them during your journey instead of packing them. This will free up valuable space in your suitcase while keeping you warm and comfortable during transit.

    • Choose items that are multi-functional: A great example is a pashmina that works in hot or cold weather and can be used as a scarf, blanket, or swimsuit coverup.

    • Grab a luggage scale!

Finally, take the time to pack the essentials BUT don’t be afraid to have fun with your travel capsule wardrobe!

    Final Words

Now you know how to use the "5, 4, 3, 2, 1" packing method and make packing a breeze while avoiding carrying heavy bags. The trick is to choose versatile items that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits.

With a bit of practice, you'll master the art of packing light and enjoy the freedom of traveling with a minimalistic approach.
